People

Moosa Fulhu

Fisher

Moosa Fulhu, our neighbour, is one of the few fisher who still sticks to the old ways. While most have switched to motorised boats, he prefers his bokkura, a small traditional rowing boat. Most days he returns with a bundle of fresh reef fish, a quiet reminder of the simple, time-honored way of life in the Maldives.

Ibrahim Didi

Fisher & Octopus hunter

Maldivians have been hunting octopus for generations, using skills passed down through time. It takes patience, experience, and a deep understanding of the reef to spot these masters of disguise.

Here on the island, Ibrahim Didi is one of the best at it. He knows exactly where to look and how to spot an octopus. But fair warning—this isn’t for everyone! Catching an octopus, or any animal, requires a certain mindset, and not everyone is comfortable with the experience.

Places

Gamu Haiytheli

The ancient ruins of “Gamu Haiytheli” are located on Mudhin Hinna a few blocks from our home. This site is believed to be part of a historic Buddhist temple compound, offering a glimpse into the Maldives’ pre-Islamic past. The remnants of stone structures and artifacts found here hint at the island’s rich and diverse history, making it a fascinating site for those interested in ancient civilizations and cultural heritage.

Hithadhoo Mangrove

The mangrove in Hithadhoo is one of the most unique and ecologically important natural spaces in the Maldives. This vast freshwater mangrove forest is a rare sight in the country, providing a thriving habitat for diverse marine and bird species. The calm, shallow waters make it an ideal breeding ground for juvenile fish and even baby sharks, offering visitors a glimpse into the delicate balance of this ecosystem. The lush greenery, mirrored waters, and peaceful surroundings make it a perfect spot for canoeing, birdwatching, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature. As one of the most biodiverse areas in the atoll, the Hithadhoo Mangrove is a must-visit for nature lovers and anyone looking to experience a different side of the Maldives beyond its beaches.

Paree Fengandu

Hidden within the lush greenery of Gan Island, Laamu Atoll, Paree Fengandu, or the “Fairy Pond,” The pond’s waters shimmer with red, orange, and green hues, created by a mix of falling leaves and algae, giving it an almost mythical appearance.

Paree Fengandu is steeped in legend. Locals tell stories of fairies, mysterious spirits, and strange creatures seen near its waters. Some once believed it was bottomless, swallowing the trees around it.

The pond remains a tranquil escape, home to freshwater tilapia.  Paree Fengandu is one of Gan’s most captivating natural wonders.
